This tour covers some very important attractions in Kandy city. The city lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy plateau, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. In old time Kandy was both an administrative and religious city and is also the capital of the Central Province. Today it’s most venerated religious city en route to Kandy you will visit a  spice garden at Mawanella, tea factory and plantation  in Giragama, in Kandy Temple of Tooth Relic, Market Square, Upper Lake Drive, Gem Lapidary, Wood Carving Center and lunch will be  served in a good  restaurant.

Brief Itinerary

You will be picked up around 6 am from your hotel then proceed to Kandy, en route visiting a spice garden in Mawanella and a tea factory with plantation in Giragama.

Spices :For centuries, spices have been one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated exports and are used for medicines and cosmetics as well as to flavor foods. You will sample scents and flavors such as cinnamon, ginger, pepper, vanilla and cardamom. From 1505 Portuguese were attracted by Sri Lankan spices and they believed that cinnamon grove in Sri Lanka has best flavor

Batik: Another handmade artistic product of mixing colors using wax as the main component and Sri Lanka is one of the world’s leading exponents. Examples range from simple, single-colored designs to multi colored masterpieces, cloths and wall hangings.

Stop at Giragama Tea factory 

On arrival at Giragama, you will visit a tea plantation 1,673 feet (510 meters) above sea level. Tea was first planted in Sri Lanka in 1824 at the Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, when a few plants were brought from China. Thereafter first commercial tea plantation was created by James Tailor   You will spend an hour exploring the plantation and factory before leaving for Kandy which is approximately 30 minutes away

Peradeniya –Botanical garden

Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya are about 5.5 km to the west of the city of Kandy in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. In 2016, the garden was visited by 1.2 million locals and 400,000 foreign visitors. It is near the Mahaweli River (The longest river in Sri Lanka).It is renowned for its collection of orchids. The garden includes more than 4000 species of plants, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees.Attached to it is the “National Herbarium of Sri Lanka”. The total area of the botanical garden is 147 acres (0.59 km2), at 460 meters above sea level, and with a 200-day annual rainfall. It is managed by the Division of National Botanic Gardens the Department of Agriculture .

The origins of the Botanic Gardens date as far back as 1371 when King Wickramabahu III ascended the throne and kept court at Peradeniya near the Mahaweli river. This was followed by King Kirti Sri and King Rajadhi Rajasinghe. A temple was built on this location by King Wimala Dharma, but it was destroyed by the British when they were given control over the Kingdom of Kandy

Visit the Temple of Tooth Relic

Kandy, the hill capital, is another World Heritage Site. It was the last stronghold of the Sinhalese Kings during the Portuguese, Dutch and British rule and finally ceded to the British in 1815 after an agreement. To the Buddhists of Sri Lanka and the World, Kandy is one of the most sacred sites as it is the home of the “Dalada Maligawa” – Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. Close by are the remains of the Royal Palace (“Maha Wasala”), “Palle Wasala”- where the Queens stayed-now used for the National Museum, “Meda Wasala” where other close relatives lived, Audience Hall, Natha Devala and Vishnu Devala are situated close by. The Bathing Pavilion (“Ulpenge”) is by the Lake and in the Center of the lake is the Island called “Kiri Samudraya” (Milk white ocean) used by the kings as the summerhouse. Today it is the center of Buddhism, Arts, Crafts, Dancing, Music and Culture .

Thereafter a do a city tour of Kandy including market squire , upper lake drive , Gem Lapidary and Wood Carving center .

Lunch will be served in a good restaurant.

Please Note: When visiting religious and heritage sites, it is customary to wear long clothing that covers the shoulders and knees to show respect.
